The other photo is breathtaking in simplicity and that it is all
Howard. This is a slightly different tone 🙂

Howard and I go back to when he was trying to decide between Pittsburgh and his many other top tier grad school choices. Foolishly, those other choices tryed to tempt him with their labs, their academic credentials, etc. I brought Howard to the Attic/Upstage/Metropol in Pittsburgh which made CMU the obvious choice for him. I’ve no photos from those many many many clubbing days, where Howard could both be relied upon to dance all night and also to be a source of sanity, but this photo from the early google days captures the vibe. Black and there was always something about the hair…
Howard loved Tokyo, loved more showing friends around Tokyo. He was a delight to visit anywhere.
Last time Howard came to London, we of course went out on the town. I have shared so many experiences with Howard over the years, it is hard to believe there will not be more.

Howard at a friend’s wedding in 2006 — in part a Google reunion. He
will always be missed by many.

A bunch of friends gathered at Zeitgeist – one of Howard’s favorite bars in San Francisco – on a beautifully sunny Sunday afternoon for a memorial. Each of us toasted his pint and shared fond memories of our friend.

A picture of Howard and me at the Upstage. We used to go dancing once or twice a week when we were both in graduate school. The picture was taken during one of his more recent visits to Pittsburgh.

This was taken in August 2007. Howard had just arrived in Dubrovnik for our wedding and he came up to the flat for a small dinner with my family. We ate too much, drank a bit and my sister tried to convince Howard of something or other that he found amusing. A quiet night of conversation and laughs that Gordana and I will remember even more fondly now.
This was taken in August 1993. Howard had just arrived in Pittsburgh and we were taking photos to document the cleanliness of the house that 5 of us were sharing. Howard was impressed by something he’d just found in the cupboard. Not long after that we’d scored some couches at Goodwill, broke a key in the front door and needed a locksmith, and Howard had educated me in the joys of a tub of Ben and Jerries Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough along with a video. A fine start to graduate life.

This picture was taken at our friend Winnie’s birthday dinner in San Francisco, on July 10th 2004. Howards t-shirt read “Corrupting American’s Youth” 🙂

This was taken on Wednesday, February 14, 2001 (Valentine’s Day), at Lilo Lounge in San Francisco (which no longer exists and the space now goes by the name Lingba, on the corner of 18th Street and Connecticut Street in the Potrero Hill neighborhood).
I was hanging out having tiki drinks with Howard, Dan Sully and Ross Cohen that night. I don’t specifically remember if Howard had any drinks since he apparently doesn’t have one in front of him in that photo, but I do remember that the rest of us got pretty tipsy, “celebrating” Valentine’s Day as a bunch of single guys.

These are two photos of Howard, our Best Man, giving the toast at our wedding in August of 2004. As you can see, he cut quite a figure in his ruffled tux shirt, bow tie, and leather pants and of all our guests, he was definitely the most memorable.
